Applying to Investment Banking Summer Analyst Positions

Applying to roles is surprisingly an important step in investment banking recruiting. It is recommended that you apply as soon as possible when applications open as they are usually reviewed on a rolling basis.

Applying to Positions

Simply put, the earlier you apply, the better your odds are. Because applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, they tend to get more selective as spots fill up. I highly recommend checking when previous applications dropped so you can stay on top of the recruiting cycle. For reference, click to see last year's recruiting timeline based on when firms dropped their 2027 summer internship roles.

As a pointer, the same rules apply for choosing interview slots, as you should schedule the earliest possible one. This is why preparing in advance is so critical, as you do not want to push back your interview because you don’t feel prepared.

Update Your Networking Contacts

Once you apply, email the people you networked with. This should be short and natural: thank them again for speaking with you, mention that you submitted your application, and ask whether they have any advice for the next step in the process.

If the first call went well or they offered to stay in touch, it is also reasonable to ask whether they would be open to reconnecting sometime for a second call. Don't make the message feel like a referral demand. The goal is to keep the relationship warm, show that you followed through, and give them an easy way to help if they are comfortable.

What to Say

  • Tell them you applied to the relevant summer analyst role.
  • Thank them for the advice they already gave you.
  • Ask if they have any suggestions for navigating the process.
  • If appropriate, ask if they would be open to reconnecting for a short call.

Apply to the Right Teams and Locations

New York is usually the most competitive investment banking location because it has the most applicants and is the default target for many students. That does not mean you should avoid New York if it is genuinely your top choice, but it does mean you should be thoughtful about where else you apply.

Look at the teams, offices, and industries that actually fit your interests and story. Applying to Houston energy, San Francisco technology, Chicago industrials, or another regional office can make sense if you can explain the interest and would actually move there. Do not apply to locations you would not seriously accept, because it wastes time, weakens your story, and can create problems if you later receive an interview or offer.
